Oh that Hurricane...

I'm thinking of renaming the blog to "Surviving Hurricane".
I would have posted about our adventures yesterday, well yesterday...but I was in shock. I was tired. But I survived.
Most of my 3 readers know that the pack and play is a good thing. Yesterday, it was worthless.
As is our normal school routine, Sophie goes into her pack and play with a toy, her puppies, and a cozy blankie....to watch the video of her choice. It used to be my choice, but I'd rather not get into that.
Sarah and I go to the next room to have school. After about 30 minutes yesterday we hear footsteps patting across the kitchen. Odd. So Sarah and I both sit there looking and who rounds the corner??? A smiling Sophie. What does she say? "hi" and walks off. After I pick up my jaw I follow behind her and tell her to get back in that pack and play, rhetorically of course. But right in front of my eyes and at a pace that seemed unbelievable, she stepped on a tv tray and climbed right in. With my jaw laying on the floor I go over to her wondering why she appears to be chewing something. Yep, she is. "What are you eating?" I ask, sure it's some random Cheerio from breakfast. I stick my finger in because...well....because it's Sophie. I can't believe my eyes, so I smell it...dog food. Yes, my daughter escaped to go have a snack with the dog. "Gross Sophie" is all I can say. It's too far gone to take out, so I tell her to hurry up and swallow it before I throw up.
I walk off to go email my mom's group....I need to know if I *should* be worried. I'm disgusted, but not so much worried. I knew it wasn't a big snack.
I walk back in after about 3 mins and hmmm....."I'm sure I put her back in there."
"Sophie??!"
"Goss mommie. teett." I hear. (that's "Gross Mommy, teeth.)
I scurry to the bathroom to find her with 2 tubes of toothpaste in her hands...one in her mouth. Of course the one with fluoride. A quick breathalizer assures me I don't need to call poison control.
"brut teett mommie, goss." ("brush teeth mommy, gross.)
We brush out the dog food. And then I realize, too, that she's opening any door she feels like now.
I put her back in the pack and play with a stern reminder to "stay here!".
I walk through the kitchen to the school room and peek in to be sure she's not throwing up or anything.
SHE'S GONE!!! and so is all my confidence as a parent and authority in her life.
Hello??? This little stinker is getting out without making a peep, not even brushing the side of the worthless contraption.
"SOPHIE!!"
I find her in her "trouble corner". Oh please, no, it's not where I send her when she's in trouble. It's where she takes stuff to get in trouble with!!!
"Sophieeeeee"....
Here's where God gives the child mercy.
Sophie, when she's doing something she shouldn't, closes her eyes. You know, so you can't see her.
"Sophie, I can still see you."
Sophie then closes her eyes AND turns her head. But continues to do whatever she shouldn't be with her eyes closed.
Good thing God made her cute.
We played the game of incarceration and escape a few more times before I gave up and fed them lunch. Sophie put up one more big fight because I did something tragic like, I don't know....put the cheese on backwards or something!!!
We went to her room where I prayed she would stay in her crib. She was hysterical. "hodt me mommie" (Hold me mommy).
So I did. And she went peacefully off to dream land snug and cozy against her mama. Holding my hand.

That hurricane was in and out in an hour. I was out for the rest of the day.

I don't know what else to say.

Well, except Sarah could not focus on school with all that commotion. :)

Art time at school

I had it together enough today to squeeze in some painting. This is the first time Sophie has shown any interest in holding a brush to paint. Even more miraculous is that she didn't taste it!!
After about 3 minutes with those we had to move her on to dot painters...she dotted with those for about 2 minutes, then spent 10 minutes just taking the tops on and off. *sigh* Then, she couldn't stand the suspense any longer...she had to taste it. Her painting session ended and guess where she had to go??

Yeah...the pack-n-play. Despite the pitiful look she was actually glad to be in there. Go figure.

Then here is Sarah. Her technique has changed a lot in just a few months. She used to just paint whatever, which usually looked like nothing. But today, she actually had a theme...Spring. She painted several pictures. I was so proud of her.

Muffin tin Monday, er, Wednesday...

Who knows what happened Monday...I'm sure I fed them lunch. But anyway, today was "What's Left Wednesday". And as you can see...not much. I did make some new Pot Slickers (chicken and veggies). The girls loved them. Then some peas, some carrots (with Ranch dressing of course), a plum tomato, and for dessert, Jell-o. It doesn't sound like much to you and me...but in their eyes I rocked today!! Food in a muffin tin...how silly is that? Crazy mom.

Pigtails and Easter hats

The cute little pigtails have arrived!!! I LOVE 2 year old pigtails!!! How cute is she?? What is she drinking? It's a grape slushy. I promise this is not her norm, but it sure did get me some cute smiles!

I bought this beautiful Easter hat with a little prayer. "Please let me get a cute little hat picture". Usually hats come off faster than lightning. When I showed her this hat she wanted to wear it all night. Yeah! Now all I need is a nice dry day outside. But here she is getting used to it.

Spring time memories

With Spring came beautiful weather. Sophie, being the hurricane that she is needed to get out of the living room and spread her wings/winds. Here we went to a local soccer field and just played. Kites. Balls. Parachutes. Giggles. Belly laughs. Just good fun.
And Sophie hung in with the big kids the whole time.

Then came Spring Break and the zoo! The train ride at the end was everyone's favorite. Most of the animals were sleeping. Or were bored to death.

We are so blessed to have these wonderful friends in our lives. Going anywhere with them makes Sarah just gush!!!

"Game on!!!!"

Yes, Hurricane...game on!

Since my last post, Puppy and Puppy 2 have been in the "body bag" TWICE!!!! Seems my little Hurricane just feels too confined in her little Pampers. Leave her for more than a few moments and you will have a naked baby.
I can not begin to explain why. It's not always. Not in certain jammies. At certain times. The girl is just keeping me on my toes.

I could only come up with one solution. A straight-jacket. No...not a real one. Although it doesn't seem like as strange an idea as it would have 2 years ago. But it does look similar. A friend gave me an idea. Cut the feet off her jammies and put them on backwards so they zip up the back. Classic, huh? I wish I would have videoed the first time we presented the idea to Sophie. She's very familiar with her jammies, she can dress herself (and obviously undress herself). So when I came at her with the little white feet bottoms missing she was instantly aware that I stepped up my game. She was AMAZED that her toes popped out of the ends! Then we put them on backwards and zipped her up....she laughed at first...then kept laying down saying "back on". Which is her way of saying something isn't right, "put them back on right."

So far, so good. A nice, only-wet-where-she-should-be, baby wakes up only in the morning....for now. Until she comes up with our next adventure in the game she calls "just wait until I'm 2!". *sigh*

So after I finish cutting feet off jammies I'm headed out to plant seeds for our garden. I figure if Hurricane is going to pick stuff up in the backyard and eat it I should plant some veggies. I'll do anything to avoid a call to the doctor having to ask if eating dog poop is toxic. :) We do seem to be turning the corner on that though. She's less likely to "learn by taste" now. And I will be one thankful mama when I only have to worry that she might accidentally STEP in poop!!!

It's Monday...pray for Puppy and Sophie *edited*

**ETA***
Thanks for the prayers. Puppy and Puppy 2 survived a wash and dry cycle. They even smell really good! I hope to not have to do that too often. And Sophie has been very mindful of where they are since they reappeared after being gone all afternoon.
And I'm happy to report, she left her jammies on last night!!!

***********

Poor Puppy and Puppy 2 (Puppy and Puppy 2 are the beloved stuffed animals of Sophie.) became the victims of Sophie's latest experiment.
At some point in the night Sophie decided her diaper was just too confining and wondered to herself "I wonder if my night would be better without this silly diaper on?".
It's not like we make it easy to remove. She does have to work at a couple of layers to get there. No matter. This girl has determination!

I didn't get to discover the initial findings. Glen did.

I woke up to find her in her pack and play in her room. And the smell. It's a wonder we all weren't killed by ammonia poisoning. Ewwww. But ya know? Sophie was fine with it at this point. Apparently not so much with every item in her crib soaked, but in her mind it was a necessary part of the journey. I guess.

Then there was the moment I have dreaded for a year. Puppy (and pal) in need of a wash. I'll be honest, I don't think they are going to make it. I put them in a lingerie bag so it could be as gentle as possible, but still, I felt a bit like I was putting them in a body bag. And when Sophie saw them in there.....the tears said it all. She was not prepared to see them that way.
I don't make it a big habit to pray for stuffed animals, but this is an emergency. Dear Lord, please let them survive the wash. Pleaaaaase!

Sophie still stinks. After breakfast it looks like we're headed for a bath.

Sarah took one sniff of Sophie's room and said "Oh, I guess you will be needing to get this cleaned up...I'll be glad to watch Dora until you need me." And so, she watches.

Happy Monday!

It's official

I've gone Mac. Soon, and very soon, dear old PC will meet a sledge hammer.
My offical "excuse" is "my kids drove me to it". It was either a Mac or a basement, and Macs are easier to add to a house. Some how I had to be able to get to a place with a computer where I couldn't be interrupted. The central room of the house wasn't working. And there is the fact that I was flirting with a crash on the PC anyway. Then there is the hatred I had developed for said PC.

I think Glen would have preferred I had just escaped for ice cream or something like that. I'll have to step up my productivity now. :) Thanks sweet husband!!!! You are the best!!!!

Now I'm on to the learning curve. Thankfully, the internet is the internet the world around. So no more PC drama here. Mac and I are officially together. :)

The independent Sarah

Not that there was ever a doubt in my mind, but Sarah is a 30 yr old in a 5 yr old body. In some ways.
Don't ask her to clean the bathroom. She'll manage to clean everything but the mess slapping her in the face. (As crazy as I am I actually considered the COLOR of Sarah's toothpaste when purchasing it. I thought if it was bright enough she could see it to clean the big blobs of it out of the sink! Not so much.)

If she were an object, she'd be a snow-blower. Why, you ask? Because she cleans her room like one. You know...just pushes everything to the side making a clear path. She at least has heeded my warning that we need to be able to get to the window in case of fire. She now extends her path to the window. That's my girl!

For the time being, lets keep her from dressing fragile children. She tends to dress them like they are a Barbie doll. For example, if that shirt is hard to get on, just twist the arm all the way around until it lines up right. Sorry Sophie.

BUT, if you need anything cleaned or taken care of after 730pm (bedtime), Sarah is your girl! Her level of expertise shoots through the roof when she thinks she's staying up late. If she thinks she's sleeping with Mama that night she would cut every blade of grass with nail clippers! She really is amazing to watch. And yet, you can imagine how frustrating that blob of neon blue toothpaste in the sink is at 9 am for me, right?

This morning she wanted to do her school work alone. Those who know me, know I don't tend to hover needlessly (I do hover around Sophie, but I think we can all agree it's NEEDED!!!)...so I saw this as an opportunity to let her spread her wings. I got out her copywork, her math, her grammer/phonics and said "go for it Sista!"
I learned I'm a completely unnecessary part of this homeschool process! She did word problems all by herself!!! She did absolutely everything she needed to do without missing a beat!!! She was soooo proud! Obviously I was so proud too! Every mom loves seeing her little ones do great, and I'm no exception. But the confidence it gives her to see that she can do it without me is priceless. Academically it's easy for me to expect her to act like a mature 5, but emotionally she's still very much a young 5. And that's where my weakness is. Trying to balance her needs in both areas. She loves school and learning. She can sit through, and learn, in 2 hour Chinese classes once a week! I can't even do that! She loves to read. (Thank you Lord! Because I soooooo do not.) She loves a challenge.

She is my little love bug. My chatterbox. My firstborn.
Man, do I love that little girl! Every night I fall in bed so thankful to be away from the talking, the questions, the constant hugs. Yep, it's true. I'm a little independent myself. But then, after about 30 minutes, I miss her like mad! I turn up the monitor to hear her reading. I go in for one last round of questions. I snuggle in the bed with her and say "snuggle up".
Kindof like life I guess. You work so hard to make them independent and send them into the world, but then they are gone and you just want to snuggle them again.

And as the cherry on my Sarah sundae...she just drew Jesus on the cross and said "here's Jesus nailed to the cross and on the 3rd day He ascended into Heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God!"
And then bursts into a vibrant verse of Sam I Am!

Life is good.

**edited to add**
Big moments in the Swan house tonight. :) Sarah just read the 1st page of the BIBLE!!! Her very "real" Bible that she works on but gets discouraged sometimes. She read the whole first page!! (only 1700 to go!) I cried. She is so proud she can hardly contain herself. She ran off singing "I can't believe I can read the Bible! I've waited so long!!! I can read the Bible!!!". Oh I can only imagine Heaven enjoying that little chorus!
And now, she's off to do her Chinese homework with Daddy. And let me just say, it's a bit humbling to see your 5 yr old reading Chinese symbols.
She LOVES learning!

Oh, Sophie? What did she learn today? Ummm. That Mommy doesn't like it when she runs into the street like a streak of lightning. And that Mommy will only do that game 2 or 3 times before strapping you into the stroller. And that after a morning of that, Mommy probably isn't taking you outside that afternoon. And lastly, Mommy is a wimp.
:)

Muffin Tin Monday (the late report!)

Where does a week go?
As I'm slowly trying to bring Sophie into the schooling area with us I'm having to be more "fun". I got this idea from another blog (Her Cup Overfloweth) it's called Muffin Tin Monday. She does a theme...but I just barely got it done. :)

Here was the "coolest lunch ever" (according to Sarah):

Sophie rather enjoyed the ranch dressing on carrot sticks. :)

We also got some new "Movement" stuff yesterday. Bean bags with games and the hit of the box were the 4ft scarves! They ran with them! Swung with them! Danced with them! Giggled with delight with them! Well worth the $11!
Sophie, it turns out, is scared of puppets. Hmmmmm. We'll work on that.

But all in all we are having fun learning together. Learning in general. Learning what works, and what doesn't. Learning that it's more fun to learn outside under the shade tree than it is in the school room in the house. :)

Today? Today is PE. We're off to the park with some friends to run and play! A little soccer, a little kite flying (that's physics right?), some climbing... and hopefully some pictures.

*edited* help me! Calling all fellow blog designers....

**edit**
I think I solved the problem. Poor ole President Bush gets blamed even for messing up a silly blog. :) His video was too big. So, I removed him. Looks like everything went back to normal now. Please leave a comment if you can read or see anything.

ok, I'm trying to tackle blog design. This is just a standard template but I have a problem I'm trying to fix and need some help.
You can see the home page right? How it has the dark ground background with light type.
Now, if you would, go to an archived page from 2008.
See how it has the title block background all the way down and the dark brown is just the mat?
I can't find anywhere to have 2 different color fonts and no color will work on both backgrounds.
I think I would like my home page to look like by archive page.
What in the world am I looking for in the HTML code to fix this? anyone know?

Or, I'm willing to do my own thing completely but need to know where to start. I can get the background papers etc. I just need to know how to set it up in the code. How did you get started with this?
